Small business SEO checklist for 2026
By Arête · Updated 5 July 2026 · 7 min read
SEO gets over-complicated. For most small businesses, getting the fundamentals right beats any clever tactic. Here's the checklist to work through first.
Technical foundations
- Fast pages that pass Core Web Vitals on mobile
- A crawlable, logical structure with sensible URLs
- One page per topic, so your pages don't compete with each other
- An XML sitemap and a clean robots file
- No accidental noindex on pages you want to rank
On-page basics
- A unique, descriptive title and meta description for every page
- A single H1 and a logical heading order
- Content that answers the search in plain English
- Descriptive internal links between related pages
Local relevance
If you serve an area, your Google Business Profile is one of the highest-return things you can do. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent everywhere. Then earn a few reviews from happy customers over time.
Content that earns its place
Answer the questions your customers ask, including the awkward ones about cost and comparison. Useful content aimed at what people want will outperform thin pages written for search engines. Write the page you'd want to find.
What to ignore
Keyword stuffing. Dubious bought links. Every algorithm rumour doing the rounds. Do the fundamentals well, keep publishing useful pages, and let it compound.
