Google Ads vs SEO: what should a small business start with?

By Arête · Updated 8 July 2026 · 6 min read

Google Ads and SEO both help people find you in search, but they run on very different timelines. Which to start with comes down to two things: how quickly you need enquiries, and how much you can invest up front.

What each one is good at

Google Ads buys visibility now. Switch a campaign on and, with the right setup, enquiries can start within weeks. SEO earns visibility over time. It's slower to build. Once it's built, the enquiries keep coming without you paying for every click.

Start with Google Ads if

  • You need enquiries in the next few weeks and can't wait months
  • People are already searching for what you offer
  • You can fund a modest, steady ad budget
  • You want to test which services and messages convert before you invest in content

Start with SEO if

  • You can give it three to six months of patient building
  • Your market rewards useful content and local relevance
  • You want enquiries that don't depend on ongoing ad spend
  • Your website foundations are already reasonably sound

The honest answer for most businesses

If you can manage it, do both. Ads bring in enquiries now, while SEO compounds in the background so you rely less on ads later. That's what the Capture and compound option on the pricing page is for. If the budget only allows one, start with the channel that matches how soon you need results.
