Landing page vs website: what do you need for ads?

By Arête · Updated 3 July 2026 · 5 min read

If you're paying for every click, where you send those clicks matters enormously. The homepage is often the wrong answer. A focused landing page is frequently the right one.

Why the homepage underperforms for ads

A homepage is built to serve everyone. It links out to every service, carries the full navigation and tries to do many jobs at once. For someone who clicked one specific ad, that's a lot of distraction. And a lot of ways to wander off without enquiring.

What a landing page does differently

  • One audience, one offer, one call to action
  • Pared-back navigation, so there's less to wander into
  • A form near the top that matches what the ad promised
  • Objection-handling and pricing specific to that offer

When each makes sense

If your homepage already converts well and your campaign is broad, sending traffic there can be fine. For a specific service or offer, a dedicated landing page almost always converts a higher share of the clicks you paid for.

The practical approach

Start with a focused landing page for each core offer. Track conversions properly. Improve from there. It's the step most likely to separate an ad budget that leaks from one that pays back.

Arête's Google Ads management includes landing page guidance, so the clicks you pay for have somewhere worth landing.
